The Al-bom
As some of you may know Spesh and I are working on our next album all summer. Whenever we talk about it we call it the "al-bom" with a German accent because last year in Miami we ran into Timo Maas and we gave him a hard time for turning down an opportunity to remix our track Deep Love 9 on Renaissance and he came back with "Yaa, you know, I've got to work on my al-bom, you know, priorities." So Spesh and I have to work on our al-bom this summer and that's pretty much all we're getting done. My to do list is out of control, I have to scroll down the fucker just to read it.
Working in the studio EVERY day is incredibly fun. At first progress was slow but now our direction is pretty solid and progress is accelerating. Getting started we knew more about what we didn't want to do (didn't want to do an album that was all pounding dance music, didn't want to do a downtempo chillout album either that sounds like every Ibiza comp) that what we did want to do, so we resoloved to just experiment and see what we liked. Started with about 30 sound sketches, then picked a few to develop, and will start that process over. The stuff that's emerging is very exciting, deeply textural, melodies being covert rather than overt but hooky at the same time, new percussive directions, some arrangements that are pure pop but I'm sure the end results will be sub-pop. Hoping to actually come up with something that is at least vaguely ground-breaking. But the process is fun.
The studio is in the backyard with lots of windows, sunshine, chirping birds ... the weather has been fantastic ... probably nobody in the UK will be able to identify with the music we compose under these conditions.
Other news: Kia's edit on "The Dive" coming along really well ... my brother is out of the psych ward and back home safe and sound ... Brian Cox's public defender finally called him back and it looks like those "assaulting a MUNI officer" charges have no chance of sticking (those darned Loöq artists, always getting into trouble) ... plum tree finally chilling out ... and hey, this web site is finally launched! Thank you Dkhan for putting it together.
