Trying to Stay Halfway Sharp
I think my posts have been absolutely vapid lately, and I have a feeling from the mood I'm in that this one isn't going to be any different. Maybe I'm going through some kind of "Flowers for Algernon" reverse intelligence process and just getting generally stupider every year. I think about some of the math problems I was able to do in the eighth grade, and I wonder ... Actually I think I'm probably OK, but it is true that my Scrabble skills are definitely rusty, my math skills aren't used for anything except balancing my bank account and fantasizing about roulette strategies, and I haven't worked on my artificial life software for months. While music production and DJing are both immensely fun, neither one really engages the gears of cognition. I'll just have to try to stay sharp by hanging around quick-witted people who talk fast and know more about politics than I do.
Qoöl LA, the first one ever, was last night, and it was a blast. Our promoting partners, Josh, Scot, Daniel, and Paul, seem really committed to the Qoöl vibe and putting together a quality party. There were quite a few familiar faces there too ... Marc Fong (in chef's hat) and Dave Lieberman (in formal wear) showed up ... much to our surprise Jackie and Alberto showed up (Spesh and I both couldn't help have the same though - "Who's running Qoöl?" - but not in any kind of panicked way as Jackie almost always keeps the ball in the air) ... Torsten and Kaine were there, Ms. E was there ... finally got to meet Rudy from Hit the Ground Running (plus his friends from Bristol) ... had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Knapp's friend Brittany (and got her film biz card for Kia) ... SF-LA transplant qoölios Alex and Brian showed up (Brian left for a bit and came back with his girlfriend's dog) ... Greg Camilleri and his friend were there, Kip Martin (who was in the music video for "The Sway") was there ... met lots of new people and I'm definitely forgetting other people who were there as well but *thank you* to everyone who showed up. It was definitely weird not to be at Qoöl in SF, but there you go - sign me up for a psychically linked clone.
The Qoöl LA promoters took us out to sushi at Fat Fish afterwards (thanks guys!) and I got to try smelt roe for the first time. Yummy. Somehow we ate sushi for four hours, though I didn't feel that full at the end of it. Signed our contract at the table (drunkenly, I think, seeing the scrawled signatures in the light of day). We weren't drunk when we wrote it though (I think).
After sushi ended up partying in Jackie's room for a bit, with a fair amount of whiskey. Got a comp stay at the Farmer's Daughter hotel on Fairfax which is a country themed kind of deal, or rather a country themed sex fantasy type of deal. All rooms come with a milking stool and pail.
Lots of things for the to do list tomorrow ... better take a late night walk to clear my head and then get some sleep. Can't wait to check out some local clubbing events this weekend. Jeez - you'd think I'd get tired of this lifestyle. Nah ... I'll probably end up like Hameed. But hopefully quite a bit thinner, and with more hair.
