Clubbing Immortals
I was having a ridiculously good time at Qoöl last night (the Wednesday happy hour /clubbing event that Spesh and I have been throwing for over a decade) when I started to think about how long I've been doing this whole electronic music production / DJing / event promoting stuff. I released my first track when I was nineteen, still in college, and promoted my first party a few years later (with Spesh and the Trip 'n Spin crew). That first event that I was involved in was called Stone Soup, and I was thinking about it because Ethan Miller was a DJ guest at Qoöl last night, and he provided the sound system for that party. It's fun being part of the old timer group that just doesn't get tired of clubbing and making dance music. Since the lifespan of the average clubber is about two years (the stages are First Really Fun Party, Evangelist DJ Lover, Regular Party-Goer, Veteran Scenester, Cynical Burnout, Back to Watching TV at Home), that makes me, Spesh, Ethan, and many others the Clubbing Immortals. It's just too fun to stop. Part of it is that I don't take drugs, so I've never burnt out on the druggy part of the club scene (which is going strong in SF, people looooove to get high), but the other part of course is making people happy with music, the incredible thrill of playing a new track out for the first time (either one you wrote or somebody else's), all the friends you make when you go to the same place every week for a decade (not to mention all the familiar faces), and also being part of a community. OK, I'll stop there before I get too hippie-dippie.
What I am not is a blogging immortal. I think I went through the average two year lifespan of a blogger, and then had to stop for a bit. But I'm going to ease back into it.
New stuff that's going on:
1) a new Jondi & Spesh track in the works (finally!) featuring Sez Giulian on vocals, it's called "Who Knows"
2) I started meditating again after reading this interview with David Lynch ... what a total rockstar that guy is.
3) Qoöl Portland! Qoöl LA! OK, we are really *not* trying to build a clubbing empire. We just have some friends in those cities who really dig the Qoöl vibe and want to spread the love up and down the left coast.
4) We finally made a myspace page for ourselves! Yes, always late to the party, I know, I know. Anyway it's www.myspace.com/jondiandspesh. Be our friend.
Have a great week ... I'll be back soon to continue my re-entry into the blogosphere.
